About the client

Newag is a modern company that effectively combines innovative technical thinking with traditions dating back to 1876. As one of the oldest railway companies in Poland, NEWAG S.A. has decades of experience in the production and modernisation of rolling stock. NEWAG S.A. is a leading Polish manufacturer of electric and diesel passenger vehicles, electric and diesel locomotives, as well as metro vehicles and trams.

Challenge

NEWAG, one of the leading manufacturers of rolling stock in Central Europe, needed comprehensive software testing, verification, and validation for the Train Control and Management System (TCMS) of their multi-system EU200 locomotive. The project involved preparing the vehicle for international homologation across five European markets (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, and Germany), ensuring strict compliance with railway safety standards and SIL certification requirements, and verifying software behavior across both simulated and real-world environments.

What We Proposed

  1. 1 Provided a dedicated, full QA and Validation team (comprising Testers, a Verifier, and a Validator) to manage the entire testing lifecycle.
  2. 2 Established a realistic TCMS simulation environment to enable earlier and more efficient validation of locomotive software during the development process.
  3. 3 Delivered end-to-end Verification and Validation (V&V) support tailored to complex railway industry standards and SIL certification requirements.

How We Implemented It

  • Deployed a specialized team of 4 Testers, 1 Verifier, and 1 Validator to carry out comprehensive software testing and compliance activities.
  • Developed and maintained the TCMS simulation environment to model diverse operational conditions and test software behavior reliably.
  • Performed software verification through source code review, integration, and structured testing in both simulated (TCMS simulator) and real-world environments (EU200 locomotives).
  • Simulated standard operational workflows as well as critical, emergency, and fault scenarios to test system resilience.
  • Analyzed, documented, and validated every test result using Polarion to ensure full traceability and regulatory compliance.
  • Worked closely with the client’s engineering team to validate complex TCMS functionalities and support the international vehicle approval process.

Client Benefits

  • Provided a complete, specialized QA and Validation team ready to handle complex railway industry requirements without expanding internal headcount.
  • Accelerated the software validation process by testing earlier in the development lifecycle via the simulation environment.
  • Reduced project risk and significantly improved embedded software quality.
  • Ensured full compliance with rigorous railway industry safety standards and SIL certification requirements.
  • Streamlined the path to obtaining vehicle homologation and approval for operation in foreign European markets.
  • Enhanced operational safety and reliability of the EU200 locomotives before entering service.
